Merlin put out a nice little podcast about the (10+2)*5 procrastination dash. The basic premise is you work 10 minutes on your project and then reward yourself with a 2 minute break. String 5 of these dashes together in an hour and you’ll experience a nice little productivity boost without feeling chained to your desk.
I love this little lifehack since it helps with the number problem with getting hard projects done – starting. A 10 minutel little chunk doesn’t seem neearly as daunting as thinking “I have to finish project X today.”
I know some of you are thinking “I can work for 4 hours straight and get more done but the reality is though you may be sititng at your desk for that time period it is unlikley you are actually working very hard or creatively that whole time. It is much easier to keep going at a high level to give yourself those nice little breaks.
I’ve tried (15+5)*3 dashes recently and find it takes me longer to get back int eh swing of things and since I work in a cube enviroment folks typically interupt me before I can get the whole 15 minutes done. I’d give my kingdom for an office door with a Do Not Disturb sign. When I really have a tought deadline I’ve begun to book an obscure little conference room where I can hole up incognito and crank out work.
